The Gothic Freiburg Minster “Our Lady” is one of the few large churches that were completed in the Middle Ages . Construction work began as early as 1200 and lasted over 300 years. Even today, numerous parts of the church date from the time of the Middle Ages, although numerous wars have raged in the city since then. This was first used for agriculture, but since the soil consisted mainly of crushed stone and gravel, a gravel company settled there in the 1920s. In the 1970s, gravel quarrying was stopped because the area was to be converted into a park. However, this was only successful when the application for the State Horticultural Show in 1986 was positive. A 35-hectare recreational area was created, with an approximately 10-hectare artificial lake, the Flückigersee.
