Umea Sweden situated just northwest of the Ume River delta where the river flows into the Gulf of Bothnia. The municipality as a whole has approximately 120,000 inhabitants. However, the number of inhabitants is rising steadily every year thanks to good opportunities for education and stable growth that has been going on for a long time.
As the city has many students, Umeå is also one of the country’s “youngest” cities with an average age of 38 years. It is not so easy to get housing in Umeå because the demand is greater than the supply of housing. At the same time, the city has a goal of increasing the number of inhabitants, so it is still being built a lot. There are several ethnic and religious associations, but also associations in many other areas. The city is the city of residence for Västerbotten County and Norrland’s largest urban area. Below we have made a list of things to do and places to visit in Umea Sweden.
The Picture Museum
Bildmuseet is one of Sweden’s foremost venues for international contemporary art, a part of Umeå University and the public heart of its Arts campus. On seven floors of striking architecture, the fields of Art, Humanities, and Science combine to consider key issues of our time. Bildmuseet is a place for stimulating encounters and conversations about art, society, and existence. It is considered one of the things to see in Umea.
Vasterbotten Museum of Umea
Västerbotten’s museum is responsible for the entire county’s cultural history. The museum’s tasks are to preserve, nurture and bring to life the cultural heritage for present and future generations. We work to keep the knowledge available to everyone through archives, collections, publications, exhibitions, program activities, advice, tours, and information.
Guitars the Museum
The Guitar Museum started as a private collection of the brothers Samuel and Michael Åhdén. In small Vännäsby outside Umeå, they slowly built their collection out of nothing. As you take part in the guided tour (see below), you will hear all about how the brothers built one of the world’s finest guitar collections. The story includes anecdotes and interesting characters, such as ‘The Greek’.
Väven is a cultural center in Umeå, Sweden located next to the Ume River. Väven opened in late November 2014, the year that Umea was one of the two European Capital of Culture. Culture fabric will include several cultural institutions that have been moved from other parts of town, as well as some new cultural initiatives. Building costs, the collaborations that have formed and the relocation of the town library to the new building has caused debate in Umeå.
The Prehistoric World Museum
The museum “The Prehistoric World” is about faith and knowledge of our origin. So it’s about history and how everything came into being – the universe, the earth, life on earth, animals, humans, etc. The museum is primarily there for education, discussion and to provide an experience. That’s why you should considered as one of the things to see in Umea.
Church of Umea
Like a small cathedral, Umeå City Church has been at the center since 1894. In the middle of the pandemic, the heart of the service continues to beat in the church by the river. Today’s church is the third in the same place. It is built in neo-Gothic style and was inaugurated in Advent 1894.
