Things to do in Schwabisch Hall Germany

We will present to you all the things to do in Schwabisch Hall Germany. The beautiful small town of Schwabisch Hall with its 40,000 inhabitants lies on the banks of the Kocher. This city is situated in the northeast of Baden-Wurttemberg.

The city can look back on almost 1000 years of history, in which Schwabisch Hall was primarily considered an imperial city and a salt-making city. Because of the salt pans and the salt production, the city was already an essential location in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period – and even today.

Strolling through the alleys of the old town gives you the feeling of being on a journey through the past. Because the countless old houses in the city center are well preserved and Schwabisch Hall was one of the few cities that was spared during the world wars. The impressive St. Michael’s Church is probably the most famous sight in Schwäbisch Hall – so you shouldn’t miss a visit to the church. And you probably won’t either – because St. Michael is located right in the city center and cannot be missed due to the high tower and the large square in front of it. Consecrated in 1156, the Michaelskirche is just as impressive inside as it is outside. It is listed as one of the top things to do in Schwabisch Hall Germany.

2. Kunsthalle Würth

Built on the abandoned site of the former Löwenbrauerei, the private Kunsthalle Würth, supported by Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG, has presented itself as a cosmopolitan house with a correspondingly varied program since 2001. In addition to impressive cultural experiences, it offers unmistakable architecture, which was honored by the jury of the Hugo Häring Prize with the Award for Good Buildings.

3. Grosscomburg Monastery (That’s one of the best things to do in Schwabisch Hall)

The Großcomburg monastery is one of the most famous Schwabisch Hall sights and is located just south of the city center – but don’t worry, a walk along the Kocher and a short climb through the forest will take you from the old town to Comburg in about half an hour. Alternatively, you can take bus number 4 from Schwabisch Hall train station to the “Steinbach Comburg” stop.

4. The Kocher Islands Unterwöhrd and Grasbodele

The small islands of Grasbödele and Unterwöhrd lie next to each other in the Kocher and are connected to each other and to the two banks by footbridges and bridges. Green areas on the islands invite you to relax, and the views of the historic houses of Schwäbisch Hall, which you can catch from the meadows and footbridges, are particularly great.

The Hangman’s bridge over the Kocher is particularly worthwhile because of the great view of the houses in the Katharinenvorstadt along Mauerstraße. Right behind it is also the Johanniterkirche mentioned below. The Henkersbrücke is probably one of the central places in Schwabisch Hall and there is no way around it on a stroll through the city.

7. Johanniterkirche

Next to the art gallery in the Johanniterkirche is the second publicly accessible art exhibition of the Würth family. This exhibition focuses on sculptures and paintings by old masters, such as works from the Princely Fürstenberg Collections in Donaueschingen. The Johanniterkirche, an extraordinary place was chosen for the exhibition – the view from the gallery is particularly beautiful.

The art and cultural history museum in the heart of Schwabisch Hall offers the perfect opportunity to learn more about the region. In seven different rooms, you can gather a lot of interesting impressions and I also recommend that you plan some time for your visit – because the area is really huge.

The Kocher runs right through the city center of Schwabisch Hall and after exploring the historic buildings of the old town, there is nothing quite like a long walk along the river bank – especially when the sun is shining! You can even rent a boat or a bike, or just lie down on the lawn in the sun.

10. Old town (That’s one of the best places to visit in Schwabisch Hall)

In Schwäbisch Hall, it is particularly fun to just let yourself be carried through the streets and alleys of the historic city center. By the way, a large part of the city center is also a pedestrian zone, which makes it even more pleasant. The Obere and Untere Herrngasse, which converge south of St. Michael’s Church, are particularly beautiful. You should also not miss a stroll along Mauerstraße on the other side of the Kocher. You can imagine your visit without seeing the old town, it is one of the things to do in Schwabisch Hall Germany.
