1. The Saalburg

The Saalburg near Bad Homburg is an exciting destination for the whole family. You can check location in Google Maps. This is an earlier fort of the Roman border wall Limes. It was guarded by more than 500 soldiers. In front of the fortification, there was a bathing and guest house as well as a village where traders, craftsmen, and restaurateurs lived. It is estimated that around 2000 people lived in Saalburg. Some of the buildings were reconstructed around 1900 on behalf of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Bad Homburg is home to one of Germany’s largest and loveliest spa parks. And it is classified as a listed site of historic interest: Because François Blanc. Who founded the casino, wanted to create something very special and therefore commissioned Peter Joseph Lenné, the Royal Prussian Garden Director-General who had already become a legend while still alive, to landscape the park. Because it has been lovingly cared for and tended to for more than 150 years.

8. Opel Zoo

The Opel Zoo is located in the midst of the scenic slopes of the Vordertaunus between Kronberg and Königstein. It presents around 1700 animals from over 200 species, most of which come from Africa, Asia, and Europe, in a unique way.

These include the only elephants in Hesse, giraffes, zebras, meerkats, red pandas, cheetahs, kangaroos, African penguins, and many more.

 

9. Hagia Sophia (One of the most interesting places to visit in Bad Homburg)

It is known as the “Hagia Sophia of Bad Homburg”. And indeed, there are many similarities between the protestant “Church of the Redeemer” and the impressive building in Istanbul.

The interior is neo-Byzantine, with rich marble-clad walls, and gold mosaics on the ceiling. The six-armed cross of light in the intersecting dome is, however, more reminiscent of San Marco in Venice, while the image of Christ as the Lord of Heaven and Earth above the white marble altar resembles its counterpart in Ravenna.

 

10. Great Feldberg

Another tip for an excursion near Bad Homburg is a tour of the Großer Feldberg in the Taunus. The Feldberg is the highest mountain in southwest Hesse. From the summit, you have a fantastic panoramic view over the entire Rhine-Main region.
