1. Alcazar

Alcázar of Segovia a Unesco World Heritage Site and arguably the most interesting castle in Spain. Built on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by two streams and with a ship bow-like shape, the structure was originally a fortress. Located at the confluence of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, the first written reference to its existence is Christian and dates from the early 12th century. The building has numerous secret passages that go down to the river and connect with some of the city’s palaces.

It was founded by Enrique IV and came under the protectorate of Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, who included his shields on the unfinished cover. The main chapel of the temple is of Gothic style, it contains a beautiful altarpiece of polychrome carving.

The church tower is posterior and is topped by Renaissance crest. The cover is unfinished at the top. On both sides of the altarpiece are the tombs of the Marquis of Villena, made of alabaster, decorated with profuse Renaissance ornamentation. It is worth noting the Gothic portal of the antechrist. It also has four cloisters: the Portería, the Hospedería, the Nursing and the main.

 

3. The Aqueduct of Segovia

It must have been one of the most important in the Roman world. It was probably built in the time of the Flavios. You have to visit Aqueduct because is one of the most interesting places to visit in Segovia. Near this place is not difficult to find car parking. Between the second half of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century, with Vespasian and Trajan emperors, in order to transport the water from the Acebeda River to the city.

This impressive work of engineering, in excellent condition, begins near the Palacio de la Granja with simple arches that lead the water to the cistern known as the Caserón. Later, a channel of ashlars transports it to a second tower and, upon reaching the Plaza de Díaz Sanz, two monumental rows of superimposed arches begin to form.

 

4. Iglesia de San Martin Segovia

It is of Mozarabic origin and has one of the most beautiful Romanesque atria in Segovia, which surrounds the church on three sides. The current structure is Romanesque, consisting of apses with Romanesque decoration and a portal at the foot of the church with beautifully decorated archivolts.

In the center of the nave is the tower of the three-section church. The atrium has semicircular arches that rest on columns with Romanesque capitals.

 

5. Poetas Garden Segovia

The Garden of the Poets of Segovia, a restored space attached to the wall and very well cared for. It is a magical place, little step, something hidden and very charming to celebrate, for example, a civil wedding. For this you would have to contact the town hall. The Garden of Poets is located on Calle del Pozo de la Nieve, it is the prelude to the Puerta de Santiago.

It was the last Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain. Built on the highest point of the city, the Segovia Cathedral began to be built in 1525, with Charles V being King in Segovia. It is of late Gothic style and was built after the fire of the old Romanesque cathedral in 1520. It has a ground floor with three naves, with side chapels and a semicircular apse with an ambulatory.

The temple, built following the plans of Juan Gil de Hontañón, has three entrances: on its main facade is the Puerta del Perdón, all of it the work of Juan Guas; on the south facade is the Puerta de San Geroteo; and the Puerta de San Frutos. It is 105 meters long by 50 wide and 33 meters high in the main nave. The main altarpiece is made of marble, jasper and bronze. It was consecrated in the year 1768.

 

7. Casa de los Picos Segovia

The most characteristic thing is its façade, covered in its entirety by granite ashlars carved in diamond points. The portal has a semicircular arch with large voussoirs. On the balconies is located the coat of arms of the de la Hoz family, owners of the house.

The hallway and patio are decorated with Talavera tiles that have different buildings in Segovia painted on them. It is currently the headquarters of the Segovia School of Art and an exhibition hall.

 

8. Iglesia de la Vera Cruz Segovia

It was founded by the Knights Templar in the 13th century. It is a unique church in the Romanesque style. Its plant is a 12-sided polygon. It has 3 semi-drum chapels and 2 doorways with archivolts on columns. The temple is inspired by the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, origin of the Order of the Temple.

 

9. Plaza de Medina del Campo

Back on Calle Real, the Plaza de Medina del Campo offers an interesting architectural ensemble reminiscent of some Italian squares. You have to take a walk in Plaza de Medina del Campo because is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Segovia Spain. The 15th century House, an old palace of the Tordesillas, an example of an urban noble residence. Plateresque gallery incorporated in the 16th century.
